Shoplifting Horror Story at Walmart

|

A suspected shoplifter was caught shoplifting two DVD players at a Walmart in Lithonia, Ga. according to WSBTV. He was seen exiting the front door at about 1:30 in the morning on November 27, 2012 and was confronted outside near the parking lot. At some point, Walmart security called the police and when officers responded, they found store employees on top of the suspected shoplifter. When they went to handcuff him, officers noticed no resistance and no response and he was transported to DeKalb Medical Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Although Walmart has stated that "No amount of merchandise is worth someone's life" this event demonstrates a critical lack of oversight and abandonment of the presumption of innocence. Based on news reports, it is unclear whether the accused shoplifter was ever actually observed taking or concealing store property. Instead, conclusory accounts that label him as a "shoplifter" are unfortunately too common which begs the question "If it suffices to accuse, what will become of the innocent?" Additionally, using deadly force to defend property is obviously wrong to most people but to a large corporation like Walmart, who knows.
